스티비 원더의 1976년 앨범 Songs in the Key of Life의 1번째 트랙.

2. 상세

스티비 원더는 노랫말보다 노래의 제목을 먼저 떠올리고 곡을 썼다고 한다. 그가 이 곡에 대해 가지고 있던 생각은 사랑은 그 자체로는 공허한 것이고, 사랑이 효과적이려면 사랑도 영양을 섭취할 필요가 있다는 것이었다.

그는 당시의 파트너 욜란다 시먼스가 딸 아이샤를 임신하고 있던 1974년 말 뉴욕의 어느 호텔에서 이 곡을 쓰기 시작했다. 그 후 로즈 일렉트릭 피아노를 이용해 카세트에 데모를 녹음했다. 본격적인 녹음은 할리우드의 크리스탈 사운드 스튜디오에서 진행했고 곡을 발전시키는 과정에서 데모에서 D조였던 조성을 E♭로 옮겼다. 이 곡의 스트링은 야마하 GX-1의 소리인데, 알 그린의 음악에서 영향 받았다고 한다.

이 곡을 녹음할 당시 스티비 원더는 원더러브의 드러머였던 레이먼드 파운즈_{Raymond Pounds}와 함께 스튜디오에 있었다. 원더가 혼자 작업하는 동안 파운즈는 스튜디오에서 할 게 없어 집에 간다고 했지만 원더는 가지 말고 기다리라고 했다. 드럼을 녹음할 때가 되자 파운즈는 자기가 연주해도 되냐고 물었지만 원더는 "아니, 이건 내가 연주할 거야. 내가 뭘 원하는지는 내가 정확히 알거든."이라며 거절했다.
